What Are Veneers? Their Benefits & How To Care For Them

    What are veneer teeth?
What are teeth veneers or lumineers teeth, benefits of dental veneers?

Dr. Khaled Al-Sayed tells us everything about dental veneers. So, what are they?

Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin that are custom-made to fit over teeth, providing a natural, attractive look. They can be used to fix chipped, stained, misaligned, worn-down, uneven or abnormally-spaced teeth.

According to Dr. Al-Sayed, a veneer is a “thin piece of porcelain used to recreate the natural look of teeth, while also providing strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel”. They are custom-made to the contour of your teeth and are bonded to the tooth’s original enamel during a series of in-clinic procedures.

What are the benefits of veneers?

Dr. Al-Sayed states that veneers create a durable and pleasing smile, especially for teeth that are severely discolored, chipped or misshapen. He adds that veneers are difficult to stain, making them popular for people seeking a perfect smile. To put it simply, Dr. Al-Sayed gives the below benefits for having veneers:

    • Cover chips, cracks, and discoloration
    • Keep more natural tooth structure
    • Allow the person to smile with confidence
    • Prevent tooth discoloration

Placing veneers and caring for them

According to Dr. Al-Sayed, the typical process to place veneers takes one to two appointments. If the veneer is prefabricated it usually takes one appointment. On the other hand, if the laboratory is creating the veneer, it takes two appointments.

So, how do you care for veneers?

Dr. Al-Sayed suggests brushing and flossing just as you would your regular teeth. He continues to say that proper daily brushing, and the use of non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste, are capital. Moreover,  patients with veneers should consider limiting coffee and other stain-inducing foods. If you’re deciding on veneers, make sure you consult your dentist and be sure you understand every part of the process and cost. A beautiful smile feels great and can increase both your confidence and well-being.

Do dental veneers ruin or damage your natural teeth?

No, veneers (dental veneers) do not ruin your teeth. In fact, they improve the appearance of damaged or flawed teeth. Only a small, thin tooth structure is removed to make way for the veneers. Even if the veneer cracks, you can repair the damage by getting a new veneer.

What are the disadvantages of dental veneers?

Dental veneers are irreversible because a dentist must remove a thin layer of enamel before they fit veneers over teeth. Removing a layer of enamel can make a tooth more sensitive to heat and cold; a veneer is far too thin to act as a barrier between the tooth and hot and cold foods.
