Dental Implants: What Are They & Are They Safe?

Dental implants: What are dental implants & are tooth implants safe?

Dental implants. Just hearing the sentence will make most of us cringe. Have you ever wondered about them?

Dr. Khaled Al Sayed explains that a dental implant is a titanium post (like a tooth root) that is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line. It technically allows your dentist to mount replacement teeth or a bridge into the area. Dental implants support a dental prosthesis, which can consist of a crown, a bridge, facial prosthesis. It can also be an orthodontic anchor – various techniques used to avoid tooth or teeth movement.

Are implants safe and how long will they last?

Dr Khaled Al Sayed clearly states that implants are a safe, well-established treatment. He continues by saying that implants, much like natural teeth, will last for as long as you care for them. If your implants are well looked after, and if the bone they are fitted to is strong and healthy, you can expect them to last for many years. However, Dr. Al Sayed stressed that just as with other surgical implants (such as a hip replacement), there is no lifetime guarantee.

Can implants always be used to replace missing teeth?

Dr. Al Sayed says that implants can be used to replace missing teeth depending on the condition of the bone in your jaw. The first step would be for him to arrange for a number of special tests that help him find out the amount of bone that is still there. If there is not enough bone, or if it isn’t healthy enough, it may not be possible to place implants without grafting bone into the area first.
